Foundation 2
Welcome to F2!
Our teacher is Miss Chisholm and
Our teaching assistants are Mrs Cranfield and Mrs Mulligan.
Welcome to Foundation 2 –
Each day, please make sure your child comes to school with:
☐ A water bottle
☐ School bag
☐ Reading book
☐ Coat
Our PE day each week will be Friday mornings, if your child could bring their PE kit at the beginning of each half term and they will get changed at school. We will then send this home at the end of the half term and it can be washed and sent back.
Our homework will be given every Monday afternoon from Autumn 1 Week 2 and it will need to be handed in the following Monday.
Heart of the Week celebration dates will be on our newsletter and you will be contacted through an Arbor message to invite you to the assembly if your child receives Heart of the Week.
Thursdays – Book changing day – Please leave your child’s reading book in their bag everyday. We send home a Little Wandle decodable reading book matched to your child’s reading ability and a reading for pleasure book to share with you. Please take good care of these and return them weekly so that another child may borrow that book.
Please pre book school dinners through Arbor.
We are so excited for your children to start the F2 journey with us!
Miss Chisholm
Our Class
Spring 1 –
This term, in Maths, we have been learning about 0 and the composition of numbers to 10. We have worked very hard on one more and one less and we will begin to learn conceptual subitising to 5.
As part of our UTW unit we are exploring the seasons and the different types of weather we experience during each season. This has been a very good opportunity to get outdoors and feel the different effects of the cold weather. For example, the frost, the fog, the ice. This has been a great way for us to develop our vocabulary whilst learning and exploring through play.
In Advent 2 we have been busy. In Maths we have been learning all about the composition of numbers 1-5, shapes with 4 sides, one more and one less and shapes in our environment.
Advent 1 – In F2 in Maths we have been matching, sorting and comparing items around our classroom. We have focused on lots of different stories; Elmer, Supertato, I am Enough and The Colour Monster.

PE – Please send your child in with their PE kit in a bag at the beginning of the half term. We will keep this in school and send it home to be washed after every half term. This will help us to improve the childrens independence on getting themselves dressed. At Sacred Heart, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds as our chosen phonics programme. Children begin their reading journey in F1 with Foundations for Phonics and progress to daily phonics lessons in F2. This is how to pronounce the taught sounds in Advent 1Pronunciation Guide Autumn 1 and Pronunciation Guide Autumn 2.
We shared our reading expertise with parents recently at our parent reading workshop to help parents know and support their child’s reading journey at Sacred Heart – SH LW Parent Powerpoint
We enjoy focusing on a different book each week, here is a few examples of our continuous provision activities based on the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.
We have produced some amazing work for our Maths, English and RE working walls.
Please prioritise reading at home. As children begin to gain confidence on Phonics, home reading books will become progressively more challenging in line with their improving phonetic understanding. There are Little Wandle Phonics pronunciation activities here to help and support plus top tips for home reading to help foster a love of reading.

Please prioritise home reading as children gain the skills of decoding and blending into words as they transition through F2. Practicing these skills really can help support children’s reading development. Here are some top tips from Little Wandle and a parent power point explaining how the teaching of phonics supports your child in their reading journey. Take the time to look at the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds For Parents page, giving you top tips on how to teach the phonemes (sounds in words) correctly.
