Safeguarding at Sacred Heart

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play.

In order to fulfil this responsibility effectively, all at Sacred Heart ensure the approach is child-centred. This means that Sacred Heart consider, at all times, what is in the best interests of the child.

Sacred Heart recognises that no single practitioner can have a full picture of a child’s needs and circumstances. If children and families are to receive the right help at the right time, everyone who comes into contact with them has a role to play in identifying concerns, sharing information and taking prompt action.

The purpose of safeguarding children is to:

Protect them from abuse, maltreatment and exploitation.

Prevent anything from harming their health or development.

Ensure they can grow up under safe and effective care.

Take action to ensure they have the best outcomes in life.

As part of our Safeguarding offer, Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Lourdes Multi Academy Trust (OLoL CMAT) have a team of people who lead on safeguarding our students.  They are our Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs).

Sacred Heart’s DSLs are also the staff members who will offer support for people with concerns around children’s mental health, wellbeing and safety, and so on.  Concerns should be shared by contacting staff using the details below.

As a Catholic primary school serving the Carlton area of Nottingham, we understand that safeguarding is shaped by children’s experiences both in school and within the wider community. We actively promote an “it could happen here” culture, recognising that safeguarding risks can affect any child, at any time, and are not limited by background or circumstance. This mindset ensures that staff remain vigilant, curious and responsive to concerns, however small they may seem.

We are aware of contextual safeguarding risks such as online harm, peer‑on‑peer abuse, antisocial behaviour in local areas, and unsafe use of public spaces. Some pupils may also experience challenges linked to deprivation, family stress, housing instability or mental health, which can impact wellbeing and safety. We recognise that as pupils grow older, increased independence and digital access can bring new risks.

Guided by our Catholic values of dignity, care and community, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Staff are trained to notice changes in behaviour, listen carefully to pupils, and act promptly on concerns. We work closely with families and external agencies, fostering a culture where children feel safe, heard and confident to speak up.

We believe it is important to help our pupils understand how to stay safe and know who they can turn to for help. We aim to empower children to recognise situations that may make them feel worried or unsafe and to know that it is always right to speak to a trusted adult.

Through our curriculum, including Religious Education, PSHE and RSE, children are taught how to look after their wellbeing, build healthy relationships and ask for support when needed. We also want families to know that there are trusted organisations available to offer help and advice if children or parents have any safeguarding, mental health or welfare concerns.
