Welcome

We love getting to know our new children and their families.  We pride ourselves on our close relationships between home and school. This begins with our transition visits and welcome meetings, which really make our pupils and parents feel part of our community and confident about what school life at Sacred Heart will bring.

Our F2 pupils enjoy access to our dedicated outdoor learning areas, as well as a stimulating and inviting classroom. These areas are full of resources to support class, group and independent learning. Some of our children’s favourite activities include getting messy in our mud kitchen, developing their imagination in our role play areas and using resources found in the natural environment to support their mathematical and scientific thinking.

Our Class

Spring 1 –

This term, in Maths, we have been learning about 0 and the composition of numbers to 10. We have worked very hard on one more and one less and we will begin to learn conceptual subitising to 5.

As part of our UTW unit we are exploring the seasons and the different types of weather we experience during each season. This has been a very good opportunity to get outdoors and feel the different effects of the cold weather. For example, the frost, the fog, the ice. This has been a great way for us to develop our vocabulary whilst learning and exploring through play.

In Advent 2 we have been busy. In Maths we have been learning all about the composition of numbers 1-5, shapes with 4 sides, one more and one less and shapes in our environment.

We have begun our festivities and we have been very busy with different activities in our class room to strengthen our fine motor skills, understand the world and discuss the Nativity story in preparation for our upcoming performance.

Advent 1 – In F2 in Maths we have been matching, sorting and comparing items around our classroom. We have focused on lots of different stories; Elmer, Supertato, I am Enough and The Colour Monster.

Little Wandle Phonics Scheme-

At Sacred Heart, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds as our chosen phonics programme. Children begin their reading journey in F1 with Foundations for Phonics and progress to daily phonics lessons in F2. This is how to pronounce the taught sounds in Advent 1Pronunciation Guide Autumn 1 and Pronunciation Guide Autumn 2.

We shared our reading expertise with parents recently at our parent reading workshop to help parents know and support their child’s reading journey at Sacred Heart – below is the PowerPoint if you could not make it to our workshop.

SH LW Parent Powerpoint

We enjoy focusing on a different book each week, here is a few examples of our continuous provision activities based on the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.

We have produced some amazing work for our Maths, English and RE working walls.

Please prioritise reading at home. As children begin to gain confidence on Phonics,  home reading books will become progressively more challenging in line with their improving phonetic understanding.  There are Little Wandle Phonics pronunciation activities here to help and support plus top tips for home reading to help foster a love of reading.

The Collins Hub Big Cat EBook Library User Guide For Parents

Please prioritise home reading as children gain the skills of decoding and blending into words as they transition through F2. Practicing these skills really can help support children’s reading development. Here are some top tips from Little Wandle and a parent power point explaining how the teaching of phonics supports your child in their reading journey. Take the time to look at the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds For Parents page, giving you top tips on how to teach the phonemes (sounds in words) correctly.
